The Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-In
By Thomas Rosquin
Automakers are trying to determine whether plug-in hybrid electric vehicles can be put on the market and still fetch a price that is affordable. Plug-in hybrid vehicles, PHEV, can triple fuel economy and mileage in short trips and recharging them costs less than the gas to go the same distance. Plug-ins seem to cut tailpipe emissions more than enough to make up for any pollution caused by plants that generate the electricity to charge them. The plug-in hybrid phenomenon appears to be a win-win, plug-ins require an additional battery capacity and plug-in charger that are quite costly. Although, regular gas-electric hybrids can’t be plugged in and don’t have capacity to run battery-only. The Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid as a concept gets an astonishing 120 miles to the gallon. It’s based on the Ford Escape Hybrid platform but the main difference is its plug-in capability which allows it to run on battery power alone for a period of time. The interior is similar to the traditional Escape, except the control monitor in the middle of the center stack is actually a communication interface that provides information letting the driver know all vehicle functions like audio, climate control, fuel economy, and battery usage. The Hybrid Plug-In merely adds couple of lithium-ion batteries and under the hood and the engine is the same compact 4-cylinder that propels the regular Ford Escape Hybrid. Upgrades like more powerful brakes, stiffer chassis, added weight in the hardware, and an integrated cooling system have been added to boost safety and drivability. The Ford brand confirmed they will bring some form of plug in electric hybrids to the market by 2012 and the finished product will be a lot like the one under development. The new Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid price will be based upon its 2012 market release. |

You did a great job with this detailed article. You know, I can't figure out what's the point of using batteries if your vehicle is a hulking SUV. Typical Detroit.
Hey One Point of Light...thanks for commenting. Most Hybrid SUVs are status symbol. Take the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, this vehicle costs $80K and only gets 20 MPG. Pretty pitiful. But at least its a step in the right direction. Ford Hybrid Escape is the best attempt by any automaker in the hybrid SUV realm. Plug-in vehicles are the next generation!
