Nissan is the Elecltric Vehicle Forerunner
By Thomas Rosquin
Nissan is not wasting their time creating hybrid automobiles. They instead have their eyes on an all electric vehicle future! Nissan recently released yesterday, on November 6th, an image of a concept commercial electric vehicle. The image is only a sketch but it shows that Nissan is trying to move forward in plans to build and entire electric vehicle program instead of focusing on a one particular vehicle. Up till this point, most of Nissan's electrical plans have focused only on the all-electric Nissan Leaf. The Nissan Leaf seats five and will make its United States debut late in 2010 but will also be followed by an even later 2011 European release and a global release in 2012. The new sketch shows a small multipurpose commercial van, very similar to the Nissan Leaf but a much beefier version. Nissan commented on the new image saying, "The low-cost multi-purpose vehicle would allow van and taxi drivers to enter urban areas where CO2 emissions are restricted." Although the vehicle in the sketch resembles a thickset Leaf, it is based on the Nissan NV200 Vanette, which is also a newer model by Nissan; launched in Japan and Europe earlier this year. It is considered by many that small commercial vans could be a natural entry point for car makers introducing all-electric vehicles. The released image by Nissan strongly indicates that an all electric small commercial van could be the company's next big electric debut following the Leaf. The company also stated their plan to build a four seat Infiniti electric compact car, as well as a new Land Glider. Most public attention will be focused on the first high profile plug in models, like the Leaf and the Chevy Volt, but long term viability of plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles depend on building across multiple platforms. |
