Diesel Kicks Some Hybrid Butt– The 2009 Jetta TDi
By Thomas Rosquin
When thinking about the word “diesel” and “diesel car”, we usually get the idea of an oversized truck with nasty black exhaust soot coming out of the tail pipe and a constant loud “diesel” knock from the engine. But the new 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI gives us a whole new idea of what diesel really means. The Jetta TDI looks like a regular Jetta but is completely different under the hood. It has a turbocharged direct-injected engine that is so very fuel efficient. The Jetta TDI will also be the first car to meet the world’s most stringent emission control standards: California’s Tier II. The Jetta TDI has a new engine that features a rail fuel injection system, instead of the traditional mechanical system, the new fuel injectors use higher pressure which better atomizes the fuel, and in turn cuts down on emissions. Most current diesels wear the Blue Tec badge. The Blue Tec diesels battle NOx; which is the biggest environmental problem concerning diesel engines, by injecting a solution upstream from the catalytic converter. This solution in turn converts the NOx into nitrogen and water. The Jetta TDi will employ a new technology where a storage unit keeps the NOx emissions in a filter till they can be burned off by the next engine cycle. The Jetta TDI’s amazing new engine is surprisingly silent and fast. It is propelled by a 2.0L that produces 140 horsepower and 236 torques, and goes from 0 to 60 in 8.4 seconds. The Jetta also attains a combined fuel-economy rating of 40 mpg on the highway, which gives it a little extra appeal than the traditional diesel car. The retail price for a the new Jetta TDI is estimated at around $23,000 but is a prominent choice for economy conscious customers who don’t want to sacrifice premium performance. The great part about the Jetta TDi is that it only costs about $22,000. The very base model Jetta starts at $15,500 with the top of the line car costing $29,220. The TDi fits right in the middle and offers so much more. The very base model 2.5 liter 5-cylinder Jetta get 21 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. The top of the line GLI sedan with a turbocharged 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine puts out 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft. of torque while getting 24 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway. The GLI is the most sporty model. But in terms of fuel economy the TDi model destroys the other trim levels. When equipped with a manual transmission the TDi averages 30 MPG in the city and a whopping 42 MPG on the highway. You cannot get better number than that unless you shell out a ton for a hybrid car.
